Tip: Learn about other ways of managing projects.
Save project locally
When creating a new project using the Explain Everything app on your mobile device (like a tablet, smartphone, or Chromebook), it will be automatically stored on your device in the local Library of Explain Everything in the .explain format.
You can choose if you prefer a system to:
- Always auto save and close a project when you leave it. With this option, your project’s new changes are always saved upon leaving it. You won’t be able to reverse any bigger changes you have made, but only a few steps that can be eliminated with the Undo tool.
- Keep asking what to do. When you have this option on, you have the choice to not save a project when leaving. This will allow you to make changes without affecting the original project and decide which version you prefer to be saved. With this option on, you can always choose to either save or not any new changes you have made when editing a project. The dialog window will pop up every time when you try to leave a project.
Set or disable the auto save when closing a project
When you leave a project created for the first time, the dialog window will ask if you prefer the application to either Always auto save and close a project when you leave it or Keep asking what to do.
You can always change this setting.
- Go to Menu.
- Select Settings.
- Go to the INTERFACE category under the General tab.
- Enable or disable Display the Save/Discard dialog when leaving project option.
By default you will be always asked if you want to save or discard changes when leaving the project.

When saving your project for the first time you will be also asked if you wish to synchronize your Explain Everything local library with Google Drive. If you choose the option every project you save locally will be also saved in the Google Drive cloud automatically. This will help you backup your projects – learn how to find this option in settings.
This option does not exist in the web version of Explain Everything, as all projects created there are cloud projects. They are automatically saved by default while being edited. Cloud projects are kept in the Explain Drive cloud.
Save or export your project to a cloud
In Explain Everything, you can also save a project and keep it in a cloud. You can either use Explain Everything's cloud or an external one.
Tip: Copy your project to Explain Drive or export it to another cloud to back it up. Learn other ways of backing up your Explain Everything library.
Save project in the Explain Drive cloud
In Explain Everything Whiteboard, you can also save your projects in the Explain Everything cloud. This option will give you the ability to collaborate with others and have access to your projects from different devices.
Note This option is not available in Explain Everything Basics. Learn more about the differences between Explain Everything Basics and Explain Everything Whiteboard.
When you use the Invite button, a copy of your project will then be saved in your Explain Drive Cloud Project library. Find out how to do this by inviting others to a project or sharing your projects with others.
When your project is a cloud project, you can open it on another device, for example on the web version of the whiteboard in a browser such as Google Chrome. Remember to sign in to Explain Drive with the same account on all devices.
Tip You don’t necessarily have to share your project or collaborate with anyone when you use the Invite option. You can make it a cloud project for other purposes – for instance just to back it up or use it easily on other devices.
- While in a project, select its name to open the Projects Settings Menu.
- Select Copy to Explain Drive.
You can make a project a cloud project so it will be automatically saved in your Explain Drive.
- Select the Invite button.
- Select Start to complete the action.
Note The project won’t be accessible by anyone until you share a Join CODE or an Invite Link.
